Had a pleasant time grocery shopping with [livejournal.com profile] sophieflapsandr. We don't really shop well together, as a rule; from my short time as a produce buyer 25 years ago, I tend to be organized and businesslike about grocery shopping -- use a list, check prices, buy the stuff that needs to stay cold last, get in and get out. She's more relaxed. But we managed to stay together; we started in the cafe, noshing treats to make us fat and enjoying the Bay Area Reporter's story on the furor among homophobes surrounding Brokeback Mountain's release on DVD. A couple of quotes were priceless:

"It's quite obvious to anyone who shops at Wal-Mart that they're no longer the family-friendly company that they used to project in their image," [the American Family Assocation's Randy] Sharp is quoted as saying. "We've seen a downward spiral trend by the Wal-Mart Corporation in which they are more and more becoming like the world rather than the family-friendly company we grew up with."

Notice how the guy can't talk English. "Project in their image"? Doesn't he mean "project as their image"? And why is Wal-mart's "downward trend" a "spiral"? I believe he was channeling Genesis' "in his image" in the first sentence, and just throwing a two-dollar word into the second to make it sound more intelligent. Once again, sloppy language betrays sloppy thinking.

Wal-mart -- and this is the first time I've ever had warm fuzzy feelings about Wal-mart, and it feels very strange -- says, "Wal-Mart provides movie selections in our stores and online, recognizing that a broad segment of our customer base wants to buy the latest titles."

Translation: Don't bother us, we're making money.

(This is one of the things that gives me hope about the "culture wars": tolerance is more profitable than intolerance. A business that tries to make money while bashing the ungodly is always going to be at a disadvantage to a business that just tries to make money. The Almighty Dollar is not such a bad ally.)

And then there was this beauty from a review on www.netflix.com (since removed): "The Bible Clearly states that HOMOSEXUALITY is WORNG!!! [sic]"

I'm not going to say homophobes tend to be illiterate yahoos. But try googling that phrase and judge for yourself.

This gives me hope as well. Call me a cynic -- but in this case I don't think I am. I think I'm an optimist on this one. :-)
