Went for a training ride today with the estimable [livejournal.com profile] catzen. In an email he'd suggested going up Mt. Diablo; after I'd pushed my eyeballs back into my head and picked my jaw up from my lap, I thought: "People do it. I should be able to do it. I should be able to keep up with a guy who has a bum knee, anyway."

Haw. We made it to the very top, all right--but [livejournal.com profile] catzen was well ahead of me practically the whole way, especially that 45-degree climb at the very top. I am not accustomed to 3000' climbs, with slopes at the end that make me want to stop and rest every ten yards.

Going from Berkeley to Mt. Diablo we'd climbed Old Tunnel Road and descended Pinehurst Road; coming back we reversed that. Pinehurst normally holds no terrors for me. This time, after all that climbing and 70 miles of riding, I was s-l-o-w. [livejournal.com profile] catzen was very nice about it. He was in a good mood because his bum knee hadn't bothered him at all. Next time, I may whack that knee with a tire pump and even things up a little.
